34. ADVENTURE TOUR AND TRAVEL IN NORTH CAROLINA
from:If unspoiled natural beauty and the charm of the Old South are what you are looking for, then a vacation of adventure tour and travel in North Carolina awaits you. From the pristine Outer Banks along North Carolina’s Atlantic coast to the mist-shrouded Appalachian Mountains, this state abounds in spectacular scenery and is rich in history.
Cyclists can follow the old Yonahlossee Trail that lies in the shadow of Grandfather Mountain, and stop to view picturesque Linville Falls. Or they can explore Ocracoke Island, part of the Cape Hatteras Natural Seashore. This fourteen-mile long island is a treasure for lighthouse buffs. The famous Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick structure of its kind in the United States. The island was once the haunt of the infamous pirate Edward Teach, better known as Blackbeard. Except for the village around the harbour, the island is undeveloped and can be reached only by boat or small aircraft.
The state has four national forests that make an adventure tour and travel in North Carolina especially attractive to hikers. You can begin your hike among the alders, sycamore and river birch of the coastal and piedmont regions, and ascend into the spruce and fir forests of the mountains. The Mount Mitchell Trail, a trek of about five-and-a-half miles, is one of many popular hikes.
The many streams that rush down from the mountains to the sea are a great challenge for those who wish to add white water rafting to their adventure tour and travel in North Carolina. The Nantahala River is considered one of the most scenic streams in North Carolina. Nicknamed the “Nanny”, its rapids are a training ground for Olympic kayakers. If you’re an angler, the rivers are well stocked with trout, bass and other game fish.
Your adventure tour and travel in North Carolina need not be limited to warm weather activities. Though North Carolina is a Southern state, its mountains are high enough to provide terrific ski slopes in the winter. Sugar Mountain is the largest ski resort in the state, and has the highest vertical drop. It also offers some of the most breathtaking views imaginable.
For animal lovers who want to have an adventure tour and travel in North Carolina, the state’s forests are home to bobcats, cougars, foxes, wolves and deer. Birders can see great egrets, snowy egrets, tricoloured herons, bridled terns, northern cardinals ( the state) bird, and dozens of other species. Some coastal areas are habitat for the American alligator.
Whatever the time of year, if you have a taste for adventure, North Carolina has something for you.
